Video converter that converts files encoded with IMM video encoder to AVI and MP4 format.
Imm4 I believe is there to hold the timestamp and camera IDas the video has been downloaded from a CCTV recorder. What I need to do is convert the video to MPEG or WMV so that we can use the footage in a powerpoint presentation. From what I can see there are loads of converters out there that will convert AVI but not AVI with the Imm4 codec!! May 18, 2013 Installing the codec into a test Virtual PC, reveals a number of things. It states IMM4, gives a version number of 5.0.0.8, and by monitoring the install, also places an IMM6 Codec into the machine! After running a few tests, it works in exactly the same way as described in the IMM4 entry. Windows 32-bit PortableDescription
IMM Video Converter is a specialized video converter enabling the conversion of video files encoded with IMM encoder to AVI and MP4 format.
The IMM encoder is commonly used by video recorders used in monitoring systems. To play such files you need dedicated players, often very limited compared to popular video players such as VLC, GOM Player or PotPlayer.
IMM Video Converter allows you to convert such video files to AVI and MP4 using very popular video encoders: Xvid and x264. To convert audio tracks MP3 encoder is used.
After conversion, video files can be easily played in any modern video player.

(Solved) - Some avi files won't play - missing codec?
(37 posts)I can't play the avi files from my camera. WMP doesn't give an errormessage or anything, just a black screen. Irfanview at least gave the errormessage 'Can't find decompressor vids: mjpg' and 'Video not available'. So I followed the FAQ on the Irfansite to find the codec. Downloaded and installed it and there is some improvement: I have a still at the start of the avi and there is sound, but no video.
What's wrong?
Sarah.
Video files have two codecs. One for audio and one for video. It appears you found one for sound but not video.
What is the model number of camera you have?
Sarah, I also have a camera (Canon PowerShot) that takes movies in MJPEG format. This stands for 'Motion JPEG' which is a format that does very little compression making it easy for a camera to process. The resulting files are larger, but easy to edit.
I also have IrfanView -- an awesome pic viewer, BTW -- but, it's not really the best media player. Although I have codecs installed to decompress MJPEG, I get the same message from IrfanView that you get. That's because IrfanView uses and older codec scheme (VFW), not the most recent DirectShow scheme. Oh, the audio plays back because it's 'PCM' format which is essentially uncompressed and doesn't require a codec.
So, first thing that you should do is try playback from another media player. From previous threads, I remember that you don't like WMP and are using Winamp instead. The latest builds of Winamp do support DirectShow Filters for decompression, so the codec that you got may already work. If Winamp won't do it, you should at least try WMP if you can stomach it.
What codec did you download? The one I use that handles MJPEG is ffdshow-tryouts which is very capable, but not very user-friendly.
@ jd2066 - I have a traveler DC-XZ6
@ScottW - Since everybody kept telling me not to delete WMP, because I would get into trouble and deleting it doesn't make a big difference when it comes to saving space, I still have it and tried to have it playing the avi files, but it won't. (It's not altered in any way as far as I know and it's WMP 11)
When playing avi files I rarely use Winamp, my favorite is Irfanview.
I tried Winamp though, but I get the same result: sound, no visuals.
I downloaded Mjpegcodecv3.2.4 here: http://www.free-codecs.com/Motion_JPEG_Codec_download.htm
Greets,
Sarah
I started looking into IrfanView and it does have an option to use DirectShow filters for playback. It's in Options -> Properties -> Video/Sound tab -> 'Use DirectShow for playing' (v4.00+). I can now play my camera's MJPEG files in IrfanView.
However, after testing several other formats I can see that IrfanView is still not a capable media player. It's primary purpose is picture viewing, and it's great for that, but the video playback is secondary and not capable enough to be your primary media player. If you don't like WMP, and don't want Winamp as your primary, then I would recommend Media Player Classic (MPC). I think this was mentioned in the other thread, but I don't remember where it lead. There are many fans of VLC, because it has built-in codecs. The downside of this is that you can find media files that will play in VLC, but won't work in other apps under Windows and that can be confusing.
You did find a good site in http://www.free-codecs.com but I notice that Mjpegcodec 3.2.4 is shareware. And, if it's not working for you, try something else. If you are willing to try ffdshow-tryouts, I'll help you with any issues. It can be found on SourceForge:
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/
Ha ScottW,
If Window Media Player would actually dó something for me, it wouldn´t be useles on my computer and I would be glad to have it. So if it does play these avifiles for me I´m more than ok with it.
A friend uses Irfanview and I tried it, but it played my avi's perfectly. WMP played them also.
I have the option DirectShow in Irfanview enabled (checked his site first to find a solution).
And I'm downloading ffdshow-tryouts at this moment. (Is it free? Freeware rules! ;-D).
Greetings,
Sarah
Sarah, yes ffdshow-tryouts is freeware. Don't let the 'beta' label fool you. This is a much updated version of the original ffdshow (which hasn't been touched since 2002). As you can see from their webpage, ffdshow-tryouts has many bug fixes and is Vista compatible. All the videophiles I know use it and it is quite stable.
BTW, you should uninstall the Mjpeg Decoder, ideally before ffdshow-tryouts. But, if you do this backwards, that should be fine. Once installed, you can try using IrfanView, Winamp, or WMP to play your camera's MJPEG files. If you have any trouble, let me know.
I installed it, but it doesn't work. Restarted, but that didn't help either.
And I have PowerDVD and Powerdirector from Cyberlink installed (never use it, but took a look now) and that has a read me file for the license of their Mjpeg codec. So I guess that codec should be there and for one reason or another these codecs don't want to work.
And I get the impression it did work before, because I have an avi from my camera that I converted to flash - so I must have been able at one point to see these files.
I've been installing several apps lately (nothing to do with audio or video, but it makes it hard to figure out where things went wrong and going back to a restore point means I loose all the other changes I made), so my goose is cooked I think ....
Tomorrow is another day - goodnight for now.
Sarah.
I have been using ConvertHQ Premium to convert the videos from my digital cameras. I think it is Mjpeg and mono.. not sure.. but it works straight ahead with ConvertHQ.
I am sure there are other apps you can use too, -U
Sarah, don't cook that goose yet! We can fix this. Instead of going back to some old system restore, let's move forward to a solution.
First, just because you have installed an application which has certain video codecs in it, that DOES NOT mean that those codecs are available to Windows and all other applications that run. PowerDVD may be able to play your MJPEG video using built-in features that are only available to it. Actually, it would be an interesting experiment to see if PowerDVD can play them and if PowerDirector can load them. Neither these apps nor any others you have should be a problem for video playback.
So, here's what to do 'tomorrow' whenever you are ready to tackle this problem. Get the Codec Tweak Tool here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/Codec_Tweak_Tool_download.htm
Run it with the following options: Detect broken codecs, Detect broken DirectShow filters, and all Generate text file options enabled. Like this:
Click next and let it fix any broken codecs/filters if it can. If that doesn't do the trick, post the output text file to http://htg.pastebin.com and I'll take a look at it.
OK Scott - a bit hasty, you'll forgive me: downloaded and ran it. That gave me this:
Imm4 Codec Windows 10
I haven't 'fixed' it, because I hope to find the missing dll and just place it where it should be. Don't have a clue as to why it's not there anymore ....
There were some more messages, but as far as posting the textfile goes, that has to wait till later.
Thanks for taking the time to help me (especially when I'm running in all directions myself LOL) - it's really appreciated!
Sarah.
EDIT: googled the dll and found it. Installed it and restarted. Codec Tweak Tool gives no errors anymore, but I still don't see the avi.
Second EDIT: put the textlog in the pastebin - hope you can meake any sense out of it;-)
Sarah, I see the output of the Tweak Tool in pastebin, thanks. I'll be back later with analysis and next steps. You are a star pupil, providing detailed descriptions, screen grabs, and pastebin text. If only all our 'clients' on these forums were so proactive, it would be much easier.
I'm curious about the non-English text. Are you in Europe?
OK. I've reviewed the entire Tweak Tool output and boy are my eyes tired. :P A couple of things leap out at me. First of all ffdshow-tryouts is nowhere to be seen. Maybe you uninstalled it -- if so, no problem.
Second, and most worrisome, is the K-lite Codec Pack. I don't like codec packs and neither do the video experts I hang out with in other forums. Codec packs are a one-size-fits-all solution, which means they hardly fit anyone well. There is nothing in there that can't be done another way. Also, it's downlevel at version 3.5.x when the latest is 3.9.x. This has got to go.
Third, is the Samsung PC Studio tool with directories named 'funbox'. I'm not familiar with this tool, but a quickie lookup suggests it is used for their cell phones. It has installed a lot of filters and some of the merit numbers look wonky to me. If this is not an app you are using all the time, my advice would be to uninstall it.
Finally, the other programs I see and the filters they have installed are alright. I expect the Nero and CyberLink applications to play well with others. I see a lot of VFW (old-style) codecs. That shouldn't be a problem but it's noteworthy.
...continuing. Below are the steps that I suggest you take, in order. If you are worried that this could mess up your system, you can create a manual restore point and give it a name. Then you will know exactly where to restore to if anything goes wrong.
- Uninstall ffdshow-tryouts, if you haven't already
- Uninstall K-lite Codec Pack
- Optional: if you can live without it, uninstall Samsung PC Studio
- Reboot. Run the Codec Tweak Tool and let it fix any problems.
- Install ffdshow-tryouts
- Run the Codec Tweak Tool to fix problems and generate a new output file
- Test playback of MJPEG and any other media files. Report back.
Also, if there are still problems at the end of this, put the last Tweak Tool output in the HTG pastebin and I'll look it over.
Ha Scott,
I'm Dutch;-)
And yes I uninstalled ffdshow-tryouts when it didn't work.
I've uninstalled the K-lite Codec Pack.
I've thought about uninstalling the Samsung PC Studio, but I have a new cellphone with camera and I like it's features and the ease of transferring the photo's to my PC.
If needs be I'll uninstall it, but for now I would like to try if I can keep it.
Ran codec Tweak Tools - no errors.
Installed ffdshow-tryouts. Codec Tweak Tools reported no errors.
But still my avi-files have only sound, no visuals.
I have some other avi files from another camera - they work, but the ones from my own camera still don't.
I have also tested my asf files from yet another camera - work allright, but funny enough all videotypes all of the sudden have WinAmp as default player. I've set Irfanview again as default (opens a lot faster - I use Winamp only for ripping music from internetradio). They work fine in Irfanview (as before), it's only the avi's from my Traveler Camera that won't work.
I'll paste the logfile in the pastebin.
Sarah.
@Scott: let's see, 'Oranje' looks like orange and 'Boven' looks like bovine. Orange Cow?!? I don't see how you are contributing to the conversation. Maybe it's not cow.
@Sarah, let's have a look inside the avi files that won't play. For that, we will need yet another tool, MediaInfo. This one is small, free, and open-source. Get it from SourceForge:
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net
Codec Imm4 Player
This tool will read the headers and tell us what format the file is and the video and audio streams inside. Also, it has a 'text' view which makes it easy to cut and paste the results here.
Hmmm, what if we add an 'A' and separate the letters, A(bove)n looks like above. Oh, Orange Above! That makes more sense. :D
Hahaha, Oranje boven;-)
Has got to do with our queen (familyname Van Oranje = of Orange) - April 30 is our Queens day. I love it, always a good time.
And we add a little orange banner to the top of our national flag, hence Oranje boven. (Also because we think they are the top. LOL)
OK I downloaded and installed MediaInfo. Ran it and I haven't got a clue to what I'm looking at, so I'll just past the textview here.

Sarah, the specs on that camera file are just fine, nothing unusual. In fact, that camera of yours produces movies just like my Canon. In the areas that matter most, container, video stream, and audio stream, your camera and mine use the same standards.
So, the fact that they won't play on your system is odd. It makes me wonder what format the files are in from your other cameras that do play. Here's the next experiment I would like you to try. Your Cyberlink and Nero software has built-in codecs. See if you can play the MJPEG files from that camera in PowerDVD and Nero ShowTime. See if you can load them in PowerDirector. I would expect this to work but, if it doesn't, perhaps they will give a more informative error message.
As for Oranje Boven, I did look it up but it's so much more interesting to hear about it from you. One of the things I love about this forum is the international scope and visitors. Reading or watching news about other countries is only informative to a certain degree. Learning from people who live there is far more interesting.
The avi's dó play in Nero Showtime! Hehe, finally something works ;-)
They do not have visuals in PowerDVD though.
And something weird has happened to PowerDirector. I got a question to update or add something, then a screen appeared with options concerning ffdshow, it didn't work, I closed PowerDirector, thinking I would start it again, choosing another option an maybe take screenshots, but now PowerDirector doesn't start at all anymore. No errorscreen or anything - just nothing happens. Maybe it will be allright after a restart, so I'll do that later.
Sorry to have no details - it happened faster than I expected.
Hearing from other people in other countries and other customs is always interesting, but what I find so great about this forum (and similar ones) is the time and effort people are willing to make to help a complete stranger. In daily life it seems nobody has any time for anybody anymore, even friends and family hardly make any time for each other, and then you fire on your PC and find there's a whole world on it's own where people behave so differently. I love that!
Ohhh help: I can't open mht files anymore. Reacts just like PowerDirector. Closes without an errormessage.
What's going on here???
Re .mnt files: Sence they open with Internet Explorer you can try resetting Internet Explorer as the default browser or at least for .mht files.
It's at Control Panel -> Default Programs -> Set your default programs. Click Internet Explorer on the left and click 'Set all defaults'.
@jd2066 - did that, but it doesn't help. I have a folder opened with the mht files in it and this window. I open a mht file and the folder goes to the back, this window comes to the front and nothing else happens.
And ScottW: after I uninstalled the K-Lite Codec Pack the folder has been left behind. In it is a folder called filters with ax files in it that won't delete. Is that a problem? Or is there a way to delete them?
Have a nice day everyone!
Sarah.
Take Ownership of them before deleting
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
@ Lighthouse: I tried that (I have it as a mht on my hard drive for easy reference - that's why I found out mht gives problems), but it doesn't work - I still can't delete the files. So I wondered if maybe they are still in use by something?
If they in use by something, It should say that when you try to delete them. What does it say?
No it doesn't say that, but 'You're not authorized to do this' (or rather the Dutch equivalent;-D).
Try using FreeCommander to delete them
http://www.freecommander.com/
Yeah - it worked! (Deleting those files that is).
I get absurdly happy when something does work these days, because there are still so many (mostly rather small) issues that don't work.
Not only the codec and mht don't work (the latter was fine yesterday ...), my HP printer closes Word97 the moment I even touch the printericon (been going on for weeks now and spend hours with the HP people on chat support, all to no avail and still have to get back to that because the connection got disconnected and they wanted to try other options), I can't use Paintshop Pro XL, because my videocard needs an updated driver and without it I get a full systemcrash.
But before I dare to update the driver I want to have a complete systembackup (actually before I make any changes anywhere anymore), but I can't find a program that actually works for me (Vista Home Premium is not supported by the freeware versions I have found so far and I'm broke after buying this PC - besides there is nothing more annoying than buying an expensive app and it still doesn't work. That's what happened with PSP. I'm not that full of confidence anymore!).
I've started different topics for these troubles and I can't begin to tell you how glad I am you're all helping me!
Funny thing is though - there is nothing that's as depressing as computertrouble. Silly how small issues keep nagging at you and counting by the jokes made about people starting to hit their monitor I'm not the only one!
And I haven't even gotten to the part that I'm actually on the lookout for some software to edit my avifiles, so I can clean them up, remove or add sound, crop parts I want to keep, paste two or more together etc. and conversion software to make flashfiles out of them so I can put them on my website.
Oh I shouldn't complain - it will all work out in time and there will come a time, that I can actually start úsing the computer, instead of working hard to get the computer to work! LOL.
Sarah.
Extended forum;-)
But I'm happy again!!!!!!
After removing the folder of K-Lite Codec Pack and a restart I ran the Codec Tweak Tool. It came up with a long list of missing registryentries referring to K-Lite. I deleted them all and voila! Irfanview immediately played the files - I even have a preview thumbnail (notice my Irfanview has a different icon than the default;-D): looka here:
OK, now all the rest and I'm dancing on the rooftop!
Have a great day my friends,
Sarah.
Well that will teach me to go to sleep! While my brain is idling, here my star pupil is solving her own problems without my help and that's just...
GREAT!! Hooray! yippee! yahoo! I'm so glad it's working for you, Sarah. I have more to say, but now I have to go eat something. More wasted time....
